History Of Cork Opera House

Cork Opera House has had its fair share of setbacks, but like the people of Cork – it is one of resilience. Opened in 1855 as the Athenaeum, it quickly became a central figure in Cork City. But like many historic buildings in Cork, it has faced challenges along the way.

In 1955, a devastating fire destroyed most of the original structure, leaving just the front wall of the building. Through public support and fundraising efforts, the Opera House was rebuilt and reopened in 1965 with a brand new modern look.

Today, Cork Opera House stands as a testament to the resilience of the Cork locals as well as their love for the arts. It has played host to some world-renowned performances and has truly cemented itself as on of Irelands best venues for arts.
